Interview with Bundem Squad from Barcelona, Spain.

Intro

Bundem Squad:
Noe Softdiamond 24  from Spain
Laura Roc 28  from Spain
Laura Maydana 24  from Argentina.
All currently living and working out of Barcelona, Spain.

1) How and when did you get started?
We started in 2009 with different members, until we ended up with our current configuration of  Laura Roc, Maydana Dancer and Noe Softdiamond.

2) Can you tell us about the Dancehall/Reggae scene/culture in Spain?(big soundsystem, popular artist, festivals/parties etc...)
Since a young age we started with Reggae music, cause back then this was the only Jamaican music available in Barcelona, Dancehall music came later, with chunes like ¨Willie Bounce-Elephant Man¨, or ¨ Wacky Deep-Ding Dong & Voicemail¨ and other commercial artists that used to appear on TV or in the hip hop scene like ¨Like Glue-Sean Paul¨.

Actually there was a likkle scene, growing up. When we talk about the scene, we talk about our city and community, cause this are the places that we usually go and link with the sounds and artists. Catalunya receives a lot of international influences, there are a lot of reasons – we’re close to Europe, many artists come here and pass by the city and the reggae party's, thanks to the good sounds and promoters that we have.

We have many sounds formed by international members like Luv Messenger from Italy and Germany, other countries where dancehall music is more evolved than Spain. There are different cultural influences ingrained here too, like the many different African cultures.
New local artists are starting to be known in our city and Spain, influenced by Jamaican Culture and, Patois. There are artists like Roberto Sánchez, Lasai, Irie Souljah, that give us the Jamaican flavour in them styles, singing  good reggae music in English. We have other artists in the rest of Spain that sing reggae music in Spanish, but they have more support in other places of Spain, not in Catalunya, cause here people like the artists that sing in english and from Reggae and Dub culture. Furthermore, the party scene in Barcelona is lucky that every day there is a reggae party, every kind of reggae party. Also, the promoters of Barcelona bring us artists like Aidonia, Konshens or Busy Signal, althought, in the rest of Spain tings aren´t like this, except for maybe Madrid.

We've also hosted festivals like ¨La Gata¨ in Zaragoza, ¨ Nowa Reggae¨ Vilanova - Barcelona, ¨Reggae Balboa Festival¨ from Ponferrada ' Castilla y León, and for the third year, the Rototom Sunsplash.

3) Can you tell us about some shows/perfomances you've been involved with? Also is there anything coming up?
Actually we're always dancing in the party, with the people and friends helping to promote special events such as: concerts, anniversaries, opening parties...- we just do a likkle show for the enjoyment of people.

Our last show was in the ¨Spanish Town¨ party, for the 5th anniversary of Luv Messenger, with Good Vibration Sound from Austria and other sounds from Barcelona like Black Up Sound.  We have a new video being released any day now as well.

4) Where do you see yourself 3-5 years from now?
Really.. We hope to create a totally international image and expand first to Europe and the rest of the world, making links with other artists for collaborations, masterclass and generally, for being part of the big international scene of Dancehall. Can not have borders!

5) It's two minutes before you go on stage, tell us whats goin through your mind at this time, how do feel? Do you have any rituals before you perform?
Adrenalin! Pure and simple!

Nerves, hopin that show gonna be allright. As for ritual, we get the hands together and scream the vybes of the moment.
TO ALL, EVER!!!

6) Can you give us brief description of typical day for you? And a performance or show day?
The three of us work, our times are completely different, so we try to practise together whenever possible, for this reason, before we were dancers we were friends, otherwise this couldn´t be possible.  For our meetings and trainings we use our house and when we’re not training, we’re looking all the new tings, new steps, new riddims, new videos and international tings generally.

Also, since long time, we customize our clothes to use it in our shows and videos.

And on performance day we meet early, we do full routine rehersal, then relax before dinner. After dinner we do a dress rehersal then...we go to the party!!

7) What are some shows/contests/artists/dancers you'd like to work/perform with?
We would love to do a  Elephant Man or RDX concert,  those artists are well known for being the creators of many dancehall steps and they have a lot of chunes that speak about it. It would be great to perform with them to any of the Dance chunes.

We would also like to participate in dance Jamaican TV contests like HypeTV, In The Dance, Danceja or Dynamite and the next European Link up.

8) Three words or phrases that best describe you?
Consistent, Fresh and Original.

9) Your favorite/most satisfying thing about being a dancer?
We really feel and love Dancehall, and we have the need to express ourselves. This is that make us feel free. We always try to surprise people and innovate, always try to do something new!

10) Have you performed in Jamaica? If yes tell us about it, if not do you plan on going soon?
We haven’t gone yet, but really we don´t want to hurry! At the moment we're making an international name and also preparing, properly to be on a good level when we go.

4) What's playin in your car, MP3 Player or Ipod right now?

Italian Danzhall Gyalz Crew Interview!!!

ITALIAN DANZHALL GYALS
Intro
Italian Danzhall Gyalz Crew consists of 2 females named Kiara & Ylenia aged 20 & 23 respectivly. They are from a town in Central Italy called Campobasso in Molise.

Questions
1) How did you get started as dancers?
Kiara and I met while taking dancehall courses, we've been together for about 3 years. After dancing all over Italy with Big Sounds and other DHQ's, we entered and won the Italian Danchall Queen Contest "Group Category", this has been one of our most important accomplishments.

2) So where can we see you next?
We have show's coming up in Catanzaro & Milan. You can find us on Facebook for more info.

3)Where do you see yourself 3-5 years from now?
We will still be dancing, hopefully in Jamaica, we plan to still be active in the Dancehall world for sure! There's always a new step to learn so we figure, why not be in Jamaica to learn them first!!!

4)Can you tell us more about the Italian Dancehall scene?
The Italian scene has been growing for many years now, with International Sounds like "One Love Hi Powa" & "Heavy Hammer" having won many clashes against other sounds from around the world.  The dancing scene is growing in popularity as well, there's always new Dancehall courses/classes popping up all over Italy with more and more people becoming interested every day.

5)Many in the Dancehall community complain that Dancehall is dying or getting "too HipHop". What is your opinion on current state of Dancehall?
Well of course music changes and evolves almost daily and we do find more and more beats sound like HipHop.  Everyone is free to like what they want of course but, personally I miss the good ol "Raggamuffin" days!!!  We are still very satisfied with Dancehall music tho.

6)So people understand the hard work put into being a Danchall Dancer, can u describe some of the preparation involved in doing a show?
In preparing for a show we train together on a daily basis for weeks, as a duo timing, and choreography take a  lot hard work to perfect.  So that everything is done in time and looks good on stage.

7)Your favorite/most satisfying thing about being a dancer?
Most challenging thing about being a dancer?
The most satisfying thing is to see people enjoying our performance and watching us dance.
The most difficult thing is to get the people involved(grab their attention/give them the vibe), this is what motivates us to be original and always learning new steps.

8)Three words or phrases that best describe you?
Humility, Energetic, & Professional

Some Fun Questions:
1) Favorite 3 Artists right now

Interview With DHQ Roberta Lady Roo

ROBERTA aka LADY ROO

Intro
Roberta aka Lady Roo, Italian Dancehall Dancer. Born in southern Italy, 22 years ago, in a town of about 27,000 people called Terlizzi near Bari, Puglia region. Born and still living there!

Questions
1) How long have you been dancing, and how did you started?
2)  When did you fall in love with Dancehall music?
I've always loved Dancehall music and have been dancing for about three years now.  At Rotodam Sunsplash in 2009 I had the oppoutunity to take classes taught by an Italian dancer for two hours each day, followed by a final perfomance by Jamaican dancer "SickInHead" & Swedish Dancer Nina Malosky aka Chikinita.  This experience sparked my true love & interest in becoming a dancer.  As soon as I got back home I began to teach myself with videos and any other training materials I could find.  Unfortunately there are no clases available in my hometown so I had to travel all over italy for Dancehall classes and lessons.  I've always taken dance classes as a child, but there is just something about Dancehall music & dancing that lets me be myself!  It's also something that I cant get enough of, once you start to just wanna keep learning and experiencing more!

My first public perfomance was July 22nd 2010, participating in a project called “Il Fatto Reggae”, created and organized by an Mc & Selecta from my area, where from this mini tour, every weekend we were out pushing the Dancehall culture, and showing the people the new dances etc... Since then I've been featured in newspapers and also started promoting my own show and dancehall night in my area,  and slowly to other Italian cities.  I was recently in Alozade's upcoming video "Man A Gallis" that was filmed in Rome. I've also competed in the 2010 & 2011 Italian DHQ contest.

3) What are some shows / competitions / artists / dancers have worked? What are some you'd like to work?
I've worked with Italian Dancer "Alevanille" someone who I respect tremendously.  She has supported and helped me with my Dancehall Dancer creeer from the beginning.  I've also danced for Elephant Man, Ward 21, & Alozade at their concerts here in Italy.

I would love to work with Artists such as Tifa, Lady Saw, Ce'Cile, Beenie Man, Baby Cham, & Busy Signal, either on stage or dancing in their videos.
I would also love to work other dancers such as Latonya First Class, Latesha, Amzone , Mad English, Cam'ron, Blazin Crew, Shisha, and Cookie Jah!

4) Where do you see yourself in 3-5 years?
Would love to visit & spend some time in Jamaica, since I've never been.  Not sure what the future holds for me tho, I'll just keep my feet on the ground and continue looking for new oppourtunities to grow as an Artist!

5) Can you tell us little about the Dancehall / Reggae scene in Italy?
Heavy Hammer is a Big sound from Italy that represents the Italian Dancehall scene on the world stage.  The dancer scene is also seeing a big boom, due to hard work put in by Veteran Dancers like Alevanille & Mad Mike etc... Not to metnion the DHQ contest. The future looks bright!!!

6) Many in the community Dancehall Dancehall complain that it is dying or getting "too hip hop". What is your opinion on the current state of the Dancehall?
Dancehall & HipHop definitly have their simailarities but, in my humble opinion they should'nt be blended together too much.  Dancehall has it's own distinct feel & identity.

7) What would you like people to know about the life of Dancer / DHQ?
The sacrifice, commitment, perseverance and determination that you must have to study and grow in this art, some people do not have the slightest idea of the work behind the success of a single step, especially when you're  self-taught, and in dancehall it's a continuous evolution, One must always keep updated on the latest moves!

8) How would you describe yourself?
I have a lot of energy and desire for what I do! I'm like a fuse, just waiting to explode!
